On 06.06.17, AIANY hosted our annual FitCity conference with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. FitCity 2017 showcased Queens, New York’s largest and most diverse borough, a fitting backdrop for exploring how designers, policymakers, public health professionals, community advocates, and funders are working hand-in-hand with local residents to reimagine civic assets and foster community engagement.
The Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria provided an equally fitting setting to discuss designing and activating civic assets – like museums, libraries and parks – that promote social cohesion and attract diverse users. Now in its twelfth year, the annual FitCity conference champions the role of design in building strong and sustainable communities.
Over 300 attendees took part in the full day of engaging presentations, dynamic speakers, interactive training, open exhibits and walking tour, both throughout the venue and on social media using #FitCity. Highlights include keynote addresses from DOHMH Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett:

- On 06.05.17, AIANY issued a letter opposing the Trump administration’s decision to withdraw the United States from the 2015 Paris Climate Accord. - On 06.13.17, AIANY testified before the NYC Council Committee on Housing and Buildings on Intro 1307-A, a bill to amend the City Charter in relation to the minimum qualifications for NYC Department of Building inspectors (DOB). - Registration is now open for the “Hyper-Efficient Building Workshops,” AIANY and Urban Green Council’s in-depth training on the design of hyper-efficient buildings and compliance with Local Law 31/32. The two-day workshops are limited to 25 participants and open to all architects, designers, engineers, and construction trade professionals.
