To our members and the greater architectural community,

Considering the outcome of the 2024 United States presidential election, AIA New York acknowledges the range of emotions members throughout our community are experiencing. As architects, designers, and advocates for the built environment, we stand in solidarity with those who feel vulnerable in this moment, especially women, people of color, immigrants, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community who may have felt targeted during the campaign.

AIA New York is founded on core values that transcend political administrations. We believe in the power of architecture to elevate human experience, foster equity and inclusion, and advance the social and environmental well-being of our world. In this time of uncertainty and as we grapple with the reality of the next four years, we continue to advocate for just and sustainable communities. As we process these historic election results together, several guiding principles will continue to inform our work:

1. Commitment to Climate Action and Sustainability
AIANY is committed to advancing sustainable practices in the design and construction of the built environment. As the climate crisis intensifies, our focus on sustainability is not just an environmental imperative—it is a moral one. Whether through designing energy-efficient buildings, advocating for climate-resilient infrastructure, or supporting policies that reduce carbon emissions, we will not waiver in our dedication to creating a healthier planet for future generations.

2. Advocating for Equity, Inclusion, and Justice
Our mission to advance equity and inclusion is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that architecture shapes the spaces where all people live, work, and gather, and it is essential that these spaces promote dignity, safety, and opportunity for everyone. Our work continues to reflect the belief that diverse perspectives enrich our practice and build stronger, more resilient communities. This mission is especially important in times of political division, and we will remain vigilant in our efforts to promote fairness and justice, both in our profession and in society at large.

3. Protecting the Integrity of Public Spaces and Institutions
Public spaces have long been essential to civic engagement and the democratic process. In times of tension, these spaces become even more critical as places for gathering, dialogue, and expression. AIANY is committed to advocating for the protection and enhancement of public spaces, ensuring they remain accessible and safe for all. We must work together to preserve the integrity of these spaces as platforms for engagement, inclusivity, and constructive conversation.

While national policy changes may affect our work, AIA New York will continue to engage at all levels of government. We will remain vigilant in our advocacy efforts, adapting to the evolving landscape while also seizing opportunities at the state and local levels to advance policies that support equity, inclusion, and sustainability. We recognize that the path forward may be complex, but we will continue to collaborate with our partners, elected officials, and communities to push for meaningful change.

In this time of polarization and alienation, we will continue to strive to make the Center for Architecture a welcoming, safe, and affirming place where dialogue is celebrated. Our shared values are reflected in our programming, exhibitions, and treatment of one another in community; if you’re seeking opportunities to feel more engaged and connected, please get in touch. Together we will navigate this moment and continue our work to shape a more just and inclusive future.

Sincerely,
The American Institute of Architects New York (AIANY) and the Center for Architecture
