Ennead Architects, About the Work, and Richter+Ratner are moving forward with the renovation of a shared community space in the library of NYC public elementary and middle school, PS/MS 57, located in East Harlem. After an initial kickoff in December of 2019 and several delays, the team is excited for their May 15 build date and grateful to everyone involved for seeing this project through. The project is a collaboration with the PS/MS 57 administration and Concrete Safaris, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to prepare youth in East Harlem to lead healthy lives through outdoor education, play, exploration, and community engagement. In addition to serving its students, the library is currently used by community members and Concrete Safaris for after-school programming. The proposed renovation will brighten the space, enhance access to STEM learning resources, create respite areas for students and community members, and feature a mural by local artist Kat Lam.
AIA New York and the project team appreciate the ongoing support of donors and sponsors including Benjamin Moore, ConstructConnect, DFB Sales, Green Generation, Kamco, Knoll, Maharam, Primason Symchik, Inc, Shaw Contract, Steelcase, Urban Land Institute, USG, International WELL Building Institute’ (IWBI), and Wynd Smart Purifier.
As a direct result of the dedication of project teams and generosity of our partners, AIA New York will assist with additional planned service projects in the summer and fall. Our model for these projects has changed due to current guidelines and we are excited to expand the timeframe to implement multiple ‘Days of Service’ over the coming months. Check for news about upcoming events and ways to contribute on our Day of Service webpage.
