by: AIA New York
On Monday, January 8, 2018, a jury of independent architects, educators, critics, and planners from outside New York City convened at the Center for Architecture to select the winners of the 2018 AIA New York Design Awards. That evening, they publicly announced the 32 winning projects at a symposium moderated by Molly Heintz, the newly-named editor-in-chief of Oculus magazine and department chair of the MA Design Research Program at SVA.
The 32 selected projects and the architecture firms that designed them–many of whom were on hand for the symposium–represent the exceptional work by AIA New York members and architects practicing in New York City in four categories: Architecture, Interiors, Projects, and Urban Design. The jurors enthusiastically named the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture by Freelon Adjaye Bond / Smithgroup Best in Competition, noting the project’s tremendous cultural and social significance.
Each winning project, granted either an “Honor” or “Merit” award, was chosen for its design quality, response to its context and community, program resolution, innovation, thoughtfulness, and technique. The newly-introduced “Citation” award was conferred on projects that excelled in relation to one specific feature.
Submitted projects had to be completed by AIANY members, architects/designers practicing in New York, or be New York projects designed by architects/designers based elsewhere. The winners range from temporary installations and exhibitions to large-scale urban interventions. 12 of the 32 winners are projects located in New York City. Recipients will be featured in AIANY’s Oculus magazine and will be on view at the Center for Architecture’s 2018 AIANY Design Awards exhibition, opening April 20, 2018.
Congratulations to all our winners!
