This West Village townhouse project transformed a historic building for an arts executive at Chanel and her family of four. The client’s world-class art collection and also pieces commissioned specifically for the home reflect in the final design that bridges art and architecture. A sculptural stair connecting the four floors serves as a striking centerpiece yet also a quiet backdrop for displaying art. The project consisted of the preservation of the landmarked façade and a full interior excavation, reconstruction, and expansion with a new terrace, roof deck, and enlarged cellar. One enters the home through a bronze door by Michele Oka Doner that leads into a skylit seating room. From gallery walls to living spaces, bold interior design and careful art curation provides a range of experiences for engaging with artworks.
