Ila Berman, Dean and Edward E. Elson Professor at the University of Virginia School of Architecture is an architect, theorist, and curator of architecture and urbanism whose research investigates the relationship between culture and the evolution of contemporary material, technological, and spatial practices. She is a featured alumna of Harvard University’s Grounded Visionaries series and the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for Design, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Fellowships, AIA’s Special Achievement Award, and the Tulane University’s President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, where she was a Favrot Professor, founding director of the URBANbuild program, and the Associate Dean of the School of Architecture until 2007. She has also held academic administrative appointments as the O’Donovan Director of the University of Waterloo School of Architecture and as the Director of the School of Architecture at CCA in San Francisco.
Gro Bonesmo has been teaching at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design since 1999 and has served as a visiting professor, lecturer, and critic at universities including the Berlage Institute, the Royal Academy of Arts in Copenhagen, KTH Stockholm, Harvard University, Syracuse University, and Columbia University. Between 1990 and 1998, she collaborated with OMA and Rem Koolhaas as the design architect in charge for the Dutch Embassy in Berlin. Bonesmo also served as co-curator, alongside Koolhaas, for the 14th Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2014.
S P A C E G R O U P has won several international architectural competitions, among them the Oslo Central Station, Tromsø Ferry Terminal, and Brattøra Hotel and Conference. S P A C E G R O U P’s award-winning and internationally-published work has been represented in the Rotterdam Biennale, the Oslo Triennale, and the Venice Biennale of Architecture. The firm was the exhibition architect for the Nordic Pavillion, “Forms of Freedom, African Independence and Nordic Models”
Bonesmo holds a Masters Degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and is a graduate of the Norwegian University of Technology in Trondheim, with studies at Sci-Arc and AHO.
Aaron Forrest is an architect and co-founder of Ultramoderne, an architecture and design firm located in Providence, RI. Led in partnership with Yasmin Vobis, the office is committed to creating architecture and public spaces that are at once modern, playful, and generous. The principals are driven by an experimental approach that leads to conceptually rigorous and well-executed designs. The office has experience working at a wide variety of scales, from single-family residences to urban-scale planning, and its work has been recognized internationally, with recent awards from the Chicago Architecture Biennial, the Architectural League of New York, and AIAri.
Forrest received both his Bachelor’s Degree and Masters in Architecture from Princeton University, and currently serves as Assistant Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design. Prior to RISD, he taught studios at the University of Pennsylvania and Princeton University. Forrest has extensive professional experience, having practiced in New York with Bernheimer Architecture and Guy Nordenson and Associates Structural Engineers, and in Madrid with Ábalos & Herreros Arquitectos. He was also a designer-in-residence at MoMA/PS1 for the Rising Currents exhibition.
Walter Hood is the creative director and founder of Hood Design Studio in Oakland, CA. He is also a professor at the University of California, Berkeley and lectures on professional and theoretical projects nationally and internationally. Hood Design Studio is a tripartite practice, working across art and fabrication, design and landscape, as well as research and urbanism. The resulting urban spaces and their objects act as public sculpture, creating new apertures through which to see surrounding emergent beauty, strangeness, and idiosyncrasies. Hood Design Studio’s award-winning work has been featured in publications including Dwell, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Fast Company, Architectural Digest, Places Journal, and Landscape Architecture Magazine. Walter Hood is a recipient of the 2017 Academy of Arts and Letters Architecture Award.
Tom Kundig is a principal and owner of Olson Kundig. Over the past three decades, he has received design honors that range from a National Design Award for Architecture from the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum to an Academy Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2012, Kundig was inducted into Interior Design magazine’s Hall of Fame and in 2016, he was elected to the National Academy as an Academician in Architecture.
In addition to receiving scores of design awards, including ten National Honor Awards and ten National Housing Awards from the AIA, Kundig’s work has appeared in hundreds of publications worldwide, including The New York Times, The Telegraph, Architectural Record, Financial Times, Architectural Digest and The Wall Street Journal, as well as numerous books. Kundig’s work can be found on five continents, in locations ranging from Costa Rica to Brazil, New Zealand, China, Mexico, Sweden, and Austria. Kundig regularly lectures and serves on design juries around the world, and is named in The Wallpaper* 150 as a key individual who has influenced, inspired, and improved the way we live, work, and travel.
Debra Lehman Smith is the founding partner of Washington, DC–based LSM Studio. Celebrated for visionary workplaces and public interiors, the firm is particularly sought after by corporate and legal clients for harnessing design in the service of organizational change. LSM has earned widespread recognition for architecture and real estate strategy. Most notably, the London-based European headquarters of K&L Gates won the British Counsel of Offices Best of the Best Award in 2012. Both it and the Washington, DC headquarters of Covington have been separately recognized by Architectural Record’s Good Design is Good Business program. Lehman Smith’s collaborative methodology has underpinned multiple creative partnerships, bringing disciplines together in the promotion of design excellence.
J. Meejin Yoon is an architect, designer and educator. She is a professor and head of the Department of Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Yoon is the co-founder of Höweler + Yoon Architecture and MY Studio. Awarded the 2015 New Generation Design Leadership Award by Architectural Record, the Audi Urban Futures Award in 2012, the United States Artist Award in Architecture and Design in 2008, Architecture Record’s Design Vanguard Award in 2007, the Architecture League’s Emerging Voices Award in 2007, and the Rome Prize in Design in 2005, Yoon’s work has been widely recognized for its innovative and interdisciplinary nature. Her design work and research investigates intersections between architecture, technology and public space.
Yoon is the author of Expanded Practice: Projects by Höweler + Yoon and MY Studio (Princeton Architectural Press 2009), Public Works: Unsolicited Small Projects for the Big Dig (MAP Book Publishers 2008), and Absence, a World Trade Center Memorial (Printed Matter and the Whitney Museum of Art 2003). Her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York, the Institut Valencia d’Art Modern in Spain, and the National Art Center in Tokyo.
Yoon received a Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell University with the AIA Henry Adams Medal in 1995, a Masters of Architecture in Urban Design with Distinction from Harvard University in 1997, and a Fulbright Fellowship to Korea in 1998.
