Galerie56 is conceived as a platform for the intersection of art, architecture, and design. It reflects our deeply American values of openness, transparency, and desire to welcome all international cultures to be part of a democratic discourse accessible to all. Through establishing a dialogue with Anish Kapoor’s sculpture, the gallery not only acts as a physical node on Church Street but also as a cultural node in the vast network of artists and designers around the world. The built form of the gallery works in close synchronization with the architecture of the building and makes a deconstructed interpretation of its intersecting volumes by translating them into a series of overlapping planes within the space. Through thoughtful spatial programming, such as lighting the space during important civic events and establishing a dialogue with other civic nodes like the Empire State Building and One World Trade Center, the space serves as a beacon for the cultural ethos of the city.
