One Manhattan West is a Class-A office tower on Manhattan’s Far West Side that revitalizes its urban context and brings a graceful addition to the New York City skyline. It is the first new office building to be completed in the Manhattan West Development—an entirely new, 7-million-square-foot neighborhood built above active railroad tracks—and is part of a pair of Ninth Avenue towers that will form the gateway into the neighborhood. Manhattan West is one of New York’s most complex projects, and the creation of One Manhattan West was no small feat—it required an intricate synthesis of architectural design and structural engineering to navigate the site conditions below and express a soft, elegant simplicity above. The tower is characterized by a gentle, minimalistic massing, and at 996 feet, it is the development’s tallest and most recognizable building. Through its location at West 33rd Street and Ninth Avenue—the northeast corner of Manhattan West—it serves as an entryway from Penn Station to the rapidly growing Far West Side. The project transforms the public realm. The tower—one of the slenderest in the city—is located 60 feet from the street to create a 23,809-square-foot plaza. This public space is the main entrance into the site, and the building’s lobby is designed as an extension. Clad in transparent, triple-height glass fins, the lobby is a physical and visual continuation between city blocks, and when the development’s 2-acre space opens in 2020, the plaza will be the primary access point.
