Thinking Outside The Box – Tapered, Tilted, Twisted Towers: A lecture by David Scott, Arup

Thursday, 03/19/2009, 6:00–8:00pm

In recent years, changes to the design and construction process have given architects, engineers, fabricators and builders the tools to design and build bigger and more complex towers than ever before imagined. This has led to a boom of unusual, tapered, tilted, and twisted towers. While developers know that geometrically simple towers can be very complex, it is also true that some geometrically complex towers can be very simple. The most successful of new forms are where the structural and sustainable solutions compliment the geometrical and environmental agenda.

Speaker:

Introduction by John Hennessy, National President, American Council Of Engineering Companies (ACEC)

David Scott PE, is Chairman of the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat and leads the Buildings Practice in the Arup New York office. David has worked on an extraordinary variety of tall buildings and through his collaboration with many of America’s leading architects has helped to create simple, elegant engineering solutions for even the most complex of towers. He will show some examples of projects where Arup have collaborated with architects Asymptote, Cesar Pelli, HOK, KPF, Moshe Safdie, Studio Daniel Libeskind, Studio Gang, SOM, Romano, TVS and more. In his talk David explores the advantages of collaboration and argues that the more complex the tower the greater the need and the greater the benefit of a close collaboration between architect and engineer.

David was recently awarded an Honorary AIA, which he will receive at the AIA Convention in San Francisco in April.
